Study Links Herbal Supplements to Serious Liver Failures and Heavy Metal Contamination

A study published in March 2026 in the medical journal Frontiers in Gastroenterology has uncovered alarming findings regarding the health risks associated with herbal supplements. Conducted by a team of eight hepatologists at the Liver Institute of Rajagiri Hospital in southern India, the research examined 91 patients who experienced adverse liver events after consuming a total of 386 different supplements categorized as “complementary and alternative medicine.”
The patient cohort had an average age of 48, with 76% of them being male. Among these individuals, a notable 40% exhibited acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), indicating that they had pre-existing liver conditions that likely contributed to their acute health crises. Among those patients with chronic liver issues, 39% ultimately died, while 11% of those without prior liver problems also faced mortality.
