Union Ayush Minister Calls for Integration of Ayurveda with Modern Healthcare
Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav advocates for a harmonious blend of traditional Ayurvedic practices with contemporary healthcare needs, emphasizing the theme for Ayurveda Day 2026 as ‘Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow.’
New Delhi: On September 7, 2026, Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav underscored the critical need for integrating India’s traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern healthcare demands during a press conference at the National Media Centre. The announcement serves as a precursor to the 11th Ayurveda Day celebrations, which are set to occur on September 23, 2026, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, under the theme “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow.”
During his remarks, Jadhav articulated a vision for transforming Ayurveda Day into a national health communication campaign, emphasizing that the celebration should evolve beyond a government initiative into a movement embraced by the public. He stated, “Ayurveda can help shape a healthier tomorrow through a focus on preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyles, and holistic well-being.” This initiative aligns with the increasing recognition of preventive healthcare on a global scale, where individuals are seeking health solutions that emphasize nutrition, lifestyle, and mental well-being.
Historical Context of Ayurveda within Healthcare
Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine with roots dating back over 3,000 years, has been a significant part of Indian culture and healthcare. The recent global shift towards preventive care highlights the relevance of Ayurveda in addressing contemporary health challenges. Jadhav pointed out that the future of healthcare lies in comprehensive strategies that incorporate not just treatment but also prevention through healthy habits, balanced diets, and routines that promote mental harmony and environmental sustainability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat, or Developed India, reinforces this approach to health, advocating for an integrated model that considers both physical and mental health as vital components of well-being. Jadhav’s remarks resonate with this vision, presenting Ayurveda as a key player in achieving these health objectives.
Core Themes of Ayurveda Day 2026
In his presentation, Jadhav outlined three main themes that will guide the Ayurveda Day campaign this year:
- Integrative Healthcare for Better Health Outcomes: This theme aims to harness the strengths of various medical systems, including Ayurveda, to enhance overall health outcomes. By integrating diverse healthcare methodologies, the initiative seeks to provide more comprehensive care to the populace.
- Evidence, Research, and Innovation in Ayurveda: Jadhav emphasized the necessity of rigorous research and innovation as foundational elements for advancing Ayurveda’s global acceptance. This focus aims to establish a robust evidence base that can support the efficacy and application of Ayurvedic practices in modern medicine.
- Ayurveda for Community Wellbeing and Sustainable Living: This theme highlights the potential of Ayurveda to enhance individual and community health while advocating sustainability, aligning with broader global health and environmental goals.
The Role of Media in Promoting Ayurvedic Practices
Addressing the media’s role, Jadhav noted the importance of disseminating accurate and evidence-based information regarding Ayurveda to combat misconceptions that persist among the public. He called upon media outlets to actively participate in the campaign, ensuring that reliable information reaches diverse audiences, including youth and rural communities. “We aim to connect tradition with knowledge, knowledge with evidence, evidence with innovation, and innovation with public welfare,” he stated, reinforcing the holistic objectives of the campaign.
Plans and Initiatives for Ayurveda Day 2026
Professor Sanjeev Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA) in Jaipur, provided additional insights into the planned activities for Ayurveda Day 2026. He emphasized that the celebrations will focus on promoting evidence-based Ayurveda, advancing research, and fostering integrated healthcare.
The event will feature several initiatives, including the prestigious National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Awards, which recognize significant contributions to the field. Other planned activities include the introduction of new programs at the NIA, the development of safety dossiers on medicinal plants, and the establishment of Standard Treatment Guidelines for skin diseases. A comprehensive report on the Ayush Services Sector will also be presented, alongside discussions on the Ayush Vision 2030 and collaboration through memorandums of understanding (MoUs).
With the countdown to Ayurveda Day 2026 underway, government officials and affiliated organizations are expected to ramp up efforts to raise awareness about the benefits of Ayurveda. This campaign aims to position Ayurveda not only as a traditional practice but as a cornerstone of public health strategy in India, aligning with global healthcare trends that prioritize preventive and holistic approaches.
As the initiative progresses, stakeholders hope to leverage Ayurveda’s rich heritage to address current and future healthcare challenges, promoting a healthier society through integration with modern practices.
