OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA) : WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
I have been seeing a lot of my Indian patients with this condition. More and more studies are coming out from India and in Indians on this condition and its strong association with metabolic syndrome (blood pressure, diabetes, obesity etc)
What is it? Repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, often with loud snoring or choking.
Health risks: High blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, poor sleep, and daytime fatigue.
Who should be tested? People with loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, daytime sleepiness and unexplained fatigue (this one is particularly important!), obesity, resistant high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, or heart failure.
Tests: A home sleep apnea test or an overnight sleep study in a sleep lab.
Main treatment: CPAP is the most effective treatment. Weight loss, dental devices, and positional therapy may also help.
Reflect on this to see if you may need to be evaluated for OSA…..I have seen appropriate patients’ quality of life changing significantly for the better and may actually improve real risks like High BP and diabetes.
