“Dietary Research in Cancer – Food for Thought” brought together medical expertise, nutritional science and community engagement to explore how informed lifestyle choices can support long-term health and well-being.
World Vegan Vision’s New York Chapter recently hosted a community health and wellness program titled “Dietary Research in Cancer – Food for Thought” at Sai Temple in Plainview, bringing together health professionals, nutrition advocates and community members to explore the role of nutrition and lifestyle in disease prevention and overall well-being.
More than 80 people attended the June 14 event, which focused on evidence-based research linking diet, inflammation, gut health and cancer.
“Our goal is to create a healthier, more compassionate and sustainable world through education and awareness about plant-based living,” organizers said.
The featured speaker, Dr. Urvi Shah, a Multiple Myeloma specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, presented current research on the relationship between nutrition and cancer. Organizers said attendees appreciated her ability to explain complex scientific findings in a practical and accessible manner.
The program also featured Shalu Nijhawan, founder of Plant Yum and a SHARAN-certified holistic nutrition and health coach. Nijhawan shared her entrepreneurial journey and discussed practical ways to adopt a plant-based lifestyle. She also conducted a live demonstration of plant-based salad dressing preparation and offered samples of several of her products to participants.
A special guest at the event was Padma Shri Awardee Dattatreyudu Nori, whose work in cancer prevention, treatment and public health education has earned international recognition. Organizers said his presence added significance to the program and inspired attendees interested in preventive healthcare.
The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers and seek guidance on nutrition, lifestyle choices and preventive health practices.
Among the key topics discussed were gut health, inflammation, dietary fibre, lifestyle medicine and evidence-based nutritional approaches to supporting long-term health. Attendees also viewed a video message featuring Amitabh Bachchan promoting veganism and compassionate living.
In addition to the educational sessions, participants enjoyed networking opportunities and a plant-based lunch and dessert served by the organizers.
World Vegan Vision was founded by H.K. Shah and Malti Shah with the goal of promoting healthier, more compassionate and environmentally sustainable lifestyles through education and awareness about plant-based living. Through community outreach programs, educational events and public awareness initiatives, the organization seeks to help individuals make informed choices that benefit personal health, animal welfare and the environment.
Organizers expressed gratitude to Dr. Shah, Shalu Nijhawan, Dr. Nori, volunteers and attendees for contributing to the success of the event.
“Events like these help bridge scientific research and everyday practice, giving people practical tools to improve their health and well-being,” organizers said.
