As the El Niño weather phenomenon intensifies, projections suggest that approximately 50 million additional individuals may fall into acute hunger by the end of 2024. This alarming forecast, released by the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP), underscores the growing crisis in global food security, which is already affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide due to prolonged drought conditions and escalating food prices linked to geopolitical conflicts.

The WFP’s report highlights that the El Niño event, which brings significant alterations in rainfall patterns globally, could exacerbate the situation for at least 225 million individuals in 45 countries who are already classified as experiencing acute food insecurity.
