Dr. Vemuri S. Murthy is an internationally acclaimed resuscitation educator, physician leader, and community health advocate whose life’s work has been dedicated to saving lives through education, emergency preparedness, and global collaboration. With more than three decades of distinguished volunteer service to the American Heart Association (AHA), Dr. Murthy has emerged as one of the foremost champions of resuscitation training and community CPR awareness worldwide.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of resuscitation education in India, Dr. Murthy played a transformative role in introducing mandatory resuscitation training programs across medical colleges affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences. His vision helped establish a strong foundation for modern emergency response education among future healthcare professionals.
As Chairman of the AAPI Global CPR Initiative, Dr. Murthy has spearheaded efforts to expand Hands-Only CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) awareness programs across the United States and India. He has developed extensive networks of physician instructors, guided university-affiliated training initiatives, and supported the establishment of several American Heart Association International Training Centers in India. His educational materials have been translated into multiple Indian languages, extending their impact across diverse communities.
A respected academic, speaker, and visiting professor, Dr. Murthy has conducted resuscitation seminars and delivered lectures at prestigious institutions around the world. He has also championed innovative initiatives, including community CPR projects linked with the University of Illinois Chicago and the development of an Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Registry in Telangana, India.
Dr. Murthy currently serves as President of the historic Chicago Medical Society, founded in 1850. He is also the founder of Project SMILE (Saving More Illinois Lives through Education), the first medical society-led community CPR awareness initiative in the United States. Through this pioneering program, thousands of citizens, civic leaders, and public officials have received life-saving CPR education.
Recipient of numerous national and international honors, including the Henrietta Herbolsheimer Public Service Award, Distinguished Physician Award, Global Health Champion Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. Murthy continues to inspire healthcare professionals and volunteers alike.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to global resuscitation education, Dr. Murthy was honored with a United States Congressional Medal as a “Global Champion of Resuscitation” by Congressman Danny K. Davis and Congressman Peter J. Roskam. The award acknowledged his steadfast commitment to improving survival outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest through physician education, community training, and international outreach initiatives.
