The study, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Investigative Dermatology, is the first to establish a genetic connection between glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) activity and androgenetic alopecia, a hereditary form of hair loss that primarily affects the crown and front of the scalp.

The research team focused on the GLP1R gene, which plays a crucial role in regulating the levels of GLP-1 receptor proteins within the body. By contrasting the activity of this gene with genetic markers associated with male pattern hair loss, the study found that men possessing GLP1R genes linked to elevated levels of GLP-1 receptor proteins exhibited a greater likelihood of experiencing androgenetic alopecia.
