OpenAI has announced an integration of ChatGPT for Healthcare with Epic’s electronic health record system, allowing clinicians to access and summarize patient information directly within clinical workflows.
San Francisco, CA – OpenAI is expanding its ChatGPT for Healthcare platform with a new integration that connects the artificial intelligence tool directly to Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) system. This development aims to streamline clinical workflows and improve access to patient information for authorized clinicians. The integration was announced on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the use of AI technologies within healthcare settings.
ChatGPT for Healthcare, which was first introduced in January 2023, is designed specifically for researchers, clinicians, and healthcare administrators. Built on advanced GPT-5 models, the platform underwent rigorous testing led by medical professionals to ensure its effectiveness in clinical environments. The launch of ChatGPT for Clinicians in April further expanded its capabilities, focusing on tasks like documentation and medical research.
Integration with Epic EHR
The recent integration allows clinicians to access and summarize patient data—including clinical notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation—directly within the ChatGPT interface or through supported Epic workflows. OpenAI noted that this integration currently supports read-only experiences, meaning that while clinicians can view and analyze patient data, they cannot modify the information in the patient record.
Clinicians can utilize the integration in two primary ways: they can extract authorized patient data from the EHR into ChatGPT for review and preparation for medical appointments, or they can engage with ChatGPT directly within existing EHR workflows, enabling AI-assisted tasks without navigating away from patient charts.
UCSF Health, based in San Francisco, is participating as a pilot partner for this integration. Suresh Gunasekaran, president and CEO of UCSF Health, commented on the initiative, stating, “As a pilot partner, we’re exploring how the new EHR integration with ChatGPT for Healthcare can help clinical teams understand what has changed and what matters most across a complex patient record. By bringing relevant information together more quickly and comprehensively, the technology has the potential to reduce time spent synthesizing data and give clinicians more time with patients.” He emphasized the importance of engaging frontline teams to validate the integration’s capabilities in practical settings.
Healthcare Public Data Plugin
In addition to the Epic integration, OpenAI announced the launch of a healthcare public data plugin. This feature connects ChatGPT to nine official public healthcare sources, including ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. OpenAI executives explained that this plugin allows healthcare teams to work efficiently with specific records and fields, facilitating comparisons and verifications of critical information without the need to search each source individually.
For instance, a research team could leverage ClinicalTrials.gov to identify actively recruiting trials and assess eligibility criteria, while a pharmacy team might utilize DailyMed to verify the latest medication labels and warnings. OpenAI aims for these tools to provide healthcare organizations with a governed and compliant method of integrating patient data, medical evidence, public health information, and organizational knowledge into a single AI-enhanced workspace.
Collaboration with Medical Experts
OpenAI collaborates with a global network of physicians across 60 countries and 26 medical specialties to refine its healthcare-related AI features. This network has reviewed over 700,000 model responses to ensure accuracy and relevance to real-world healthcare scenarios. According to OpenAI, physicians evaluated ChatGPT’s performance across 27 clinical use cases, including pre-visit reviews and medication assessments. Remarkably, 99.1% of responses were rated as safe across all use cases, while over 93% of responses were deemed to have good accuracy when tested against five connected data sources.
Enterprise Controls and Compliance
ChatGPT for Healthcare integrates enterprise-level controls such as role-based access, single sign-on, and audit logs, ensuring that organizations can maintain compliance with healthcare regulations. OpenAI has stated that with a business associate agreement in place, customers can utilize ChatGPT Work, Codex, and other applications within the same workspace, supporting HIPAA-compliant workflows.
