GENEVA: The global health organization Gavi announced on September 14, 2026, that promising new vaccines for tuberculosis (TB), projected to be available by 2029, have the potential to save over seven million lives over the next decade. However, the success of these vaccines hinges on ensuring sufficient, predictable, and affordable supply for countries most affected by the disease.
“These vaccines have the potential to become the next blockbuster immunization tool,” said Sania Nishtar, head of the Gavi global vaccine alliance, emphasizing the critical need for reliable distribution channels in regions with the highest disease burden.
Current State of Tuberculosis Vaccination
Tuberculosis remains a significant public health challenge, being the world’s leading infectious killer. In 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 1.23 million TB-related deaths globally. Currently, the only vaccine licensed to combat TB is the Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, which has been in use for over a century. While the BCG vaccine is effective in protecting infants and young children against severe TB forms, its efficacy diminishes over time, leaving a substantial gap in protection for adolescents and adults.
According to the WHO, while the BCG vaccine has shown effectiveness in reducing the incidence of severe TB in young populations, it does not provide adequate long-term immunity for older age groups.
